Ever since I was a young child, I’ve aways wanted to become a doctor. I just thought it would be amazing to be able to help save someones life or help someone become healthier. A few years ago I decided that my dream job/goal was to become a surgeon. More specifically I strive to become a cardio-thoracic surgeon. This area specializes in the heart and thoracic cavity, as well as the lungs.

I was motivated to want this career by my young cousin who had heart surgery just a few years ago. We all knew that the surgery had to be done and were petrified  at the thought of it because she was only 3 years old. When she finally got out of surgery and her body was completely fine internally, I found it amazing that a team of people can do something like that short of a miracle. That was the day when I realized that one day I wanted to be apart of that ‘team’.

Any field in a medical career requires a decent amount of schooling, but for what I want to do, I’m expecting to be in school until my mid-late 20’s. There’s the four year college, followed by x amount of years needed in med school followed by surgeon school all amounting to roughly 10 years of school after i graduate high school. This was something i had to consider when choosing this career for many people would not want to spend that much time in school. Looking at the average salary makes it that much easier to deal with though.

The salary is one of the biggest material advances in choosing this career. Surgeons these days make around $280,000 a year, which can make anyones jaw drop.
